Sometimes the Only Way Out is Through

As in hurricanes, as in life, sometimes the only way out is through...

This week hurricane Irma came racing through the state of Florida. Even at her less than predicted pace, she made herself known. Advanced preparations had us thinking ahead – plan for this, plan for that.

Days and days of planning, yet the unexpected still reared its head. Supplies ordered well in advance of the storm never arrived, assistance of friends promised were rerouted at the last minute.

Downed trees blocking streets was a scene repeated street after street

Of course the unexpected happened, after all, the unexpected is always expected. When you have only your imagination to paint the picture, you must wait for reality to fill in the details.

and we were in a ‘flood free’ zone…

Being well clear of the evacuated flood zones, we did not expect to see the flooding so up close and personal. We did not expect the young, strong trees lining the house to release their heavy branches, pulling down gutters and narrowly missing windows. We hadn’t planned for the tree at the end of the street to come crashing down, yanking power lines down along with it, completely blocking off access to our dead end street. A scene found to be repeated street after street.

The only way out is through
A very small portion of debris beginning to pile up on a muggy day

We also could not have predicted the neighbors who spontaneously appeared to pitch in, picking up debris and and heavy limbs. Or the neighbor offering hot coffee and a hot meal thanks to his own pre planned hurricane generator. Even hearing from far away friends and family offering words of support provided an unexpected lift to disheartened spirits.

Whatever storm heads into your life – prepare as you can, expect the unexpected, and know that there will be people there to help you through.
